Starting situation

The task was to build a musical theatre in the former exhibition hall 107 of the Basel Exhibition Center which conforms fully to the requirements of a modern professional theatre.

“House-in-house” concept

The concept on which the project is based is a “house-in-house” construction in which the new components are included irrespective of the existing shell. Only the auditorium ceiling and the stage tower penetrate through the original roof and are recognisable from the outside. As a result, the outer appearance of the former exhibition hall can be maintained as a witness to the remarkable industrial architecture of the 1950’s.
