Shopping center Bundesplatz

Zug, Switzerland

2002

The precisely defined building edges and surfaces plus the application of interesting and modern materials create a building appearance which does justice to its central location. This solitary structure is directly linked through Alpenstrasse with the railway station, and its front facade faces the center of the Bundesplatz square. This enhances the significance of the building and offers exciting opportunities for urban development.

The levels above the ground floor include six apartments with an exclusive view of the Alps and the lake in addition to an office section with gallery enclosed on three sides and facing the Bundesplatz. To handle the substantial breadths of the building, double-story light cubes are provided inside the building to allow natural light to flow to the farthest recesses of the interior. In the apartments, generous glass-enclosed roof openings extend all the way into the rooms. The cantilever structures on the first and second floors are designed as large showcases based on similar structural design principles as bridges. On the one hand, this provides a direct interaction with the exterior, and on the other hand it turns the sales areas – which by their very nature tend to be introverted – inside out.

The restaurant facing the Bundesplatz square is of special significance. With high precision and transparency, it reflects the interface between the public and the private space and is a flowing extension of the square.
