Extension mixing room GivaudanVernier-Geneva, Switzerland 2004 - 2005Givaudan Suisse SA General planning, architecture, construction management back to list |
The 3 themes discussed below express the remarkable character of this fine chemicals industrial complex. Space limitation The determination of the owner’s project team and the architects planning experience helped to enlarge the initial perimeter to integrate and reorganize the large mixing sector in phases. Improved flow logistics and user comfort are additional features contributing greatly to the availability of the new production facility. Special implementation conditions The intervention in the midst of a fully operational production zone made it necessary to separate into phases the construction activities and the moves of process equipments. This implementation requirement was made possible by precise analysis of the operating conditions and was supported by close coordination between building and process. The replacement of the vertical support structure by underpinning of the superstructure is an example of the technical project challenges which had to be faced in order to meet restricted budge conditions. Architecture The external architectural project expression is centered on the northwest facade which opens towards the main access artery to the site. Apart from technical constraints, the project development process revealed the client’s desire to create an image. The inner skin of the facade serves the needs of thermal insulation, resistance to occupational use, light transmission and natural ventilation. The outside screen is detached from the facade and made of perforated aluminum sheet which is screwed into suspended stainless steel frames. The declined monochromatic treatment around the anodized aluminum adds to the project’s creation of unit and to its expression of modern design. |
