Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing BPM Lonza AGVisp, Switzerland 2002 - 2004Lonza AG, Basel General planning, architecture, realization |
A new building for the production of certain proteins using the synthesizing power of recombined bacteria and selected yeast strains was planned for the factory premises of Lonza AG in Visp. Due to serious changes in the pharmaceutical industry, only the “sealed building” shell was constructed for the time being.
The large, austere buildings with a volume of about 77,000 cubic meters are integrated noticeably, yet naturally in the existing orthogonal structure of the premises.
The clear and rational structure of the building is divided into a process section (production) and a support section (laboratories, offices, etc.), each with different building level heights.
The changeability and fire protection requirements, in conjunction with the need to minimize construction time, led to the decision to use prefabricated units. The entire support structure with supports, beams, ceiling slabs, elevator (lift) wells and stairwells plus the facade are made of prefabricated concrete components. The 1200 individual elements will be assembled on site like a huge “lego” structure within a mere three months.
