Cooperative apartment Martinsgasse

Basel, Switzerland

2003 - 2005

Canton of Basel-City

General planning, architecture, realization

Martinsgasse is a street located in the northern part of the “Münsterhügel” in the heart of the City of Basel. The silk ribbon mill on Martinsgasse 6+8 built in 1889 was utilized since 1931 for part of the municipal administration.

The buildings, which are located in a zone of protected monuments, will house 12 generously sized owner-occupied flats with an elevated interior standard in addition to a commercially utilized unit. The historical substance of the building (façades) will be retained to the furthest possible extent.

The structure of the buildings on Martinsgasse 6 can clearly be divided into a rear and a front house. This structure will remain visible on the ground floor and the attic. In the top building levels, the structures of this “front” and “rear” will be changed in favor of a continuous residential organization proceeding from north (Martinsgasse) to south (view of City Hall and City). Thus, the flats will combine the qualities of Martinsgasse with the unique views of the inner courtyards of the “Weisses und Blaues Haus” (White and Blue House), the southward aspect and the view of the City Hall tower and city skyline behind the market square.

The flats on the ground floor will have courtyard gardens. Most of the flats in the top stories will have balconies or atriums with roof terraces.
