Bank building Aeschenplatz 1

Basel, Switzerland

1990 - 1995

UBS (Schweiz. Bankgesellschaft), Zürich/Basel

Construction management, project management, Collaboration with Mario Botta

The competition project for the new building at Aeschenplatz was started in 1986. Almost 10 years later, the building was completed and with it part of the City, its image and its identity. Previously, there were individual buildings at the crossing of Aeschenplatz/ St. Jakobs-Strasse which had, as it were, been erected “outside of the City”. The new building has changed this structural fragmentation to a major extent.

With its convex forms in the main part, the new building draws a 180 degree reference curve and thus also includes the area of the entire Aeschenplatz. At the same time, it forms the entrance gate to St. Jakobs-Strasse.

Burckhardt+Partner AG was chosen by the building owners as local partner for the project by Mario Botta, and entrusted with the project and building management as well as with monitoring costs /deadlines and the building management. The ten-year, intensive cooperation between Mario Botta and Burkhardt+Partner AG provided a guarantee for optimum implementation of the specific bank requirements.
