The Sputnik Engineering AG company founded in Biel in 1991 is a world leader in the manufacture of network-coupled solar inverters.

In 2009 Burckhardt+Partner AG won the architectural competition by invitation for a new office and production building at Bözingenfeld in Biel.

The architectonic concept is derived from the use of the new building. The production facilities designed for maximum flexibility in use are located on the ground floor. The office wings are organised on the two upper floors around an internal courtyard. Visual references and room-high glazing create an impression of generous space and transparency. The façade links the specialised sections of the building into a unified whole. Wood is employed as a clear reference to a natural product; as a material which ensures economical use of resources, it makes a significant contribution to the sustainability of the building. The wood façade has a permanent signal effect and also stands out in an understated manner from the other buildings on the industrial estate.

Investments and maintenance costs have been optimised as far as possible in a design-to-cost process. The high flexibility of the office and production spaces and the possibility of easily separating off areas for rental, enhance the value of the new building.

The new Sputnik Engineering AG Headquarters embodies the spirit of the company both internally and externally. The impressive form and material expression of the building enable clients and employees alike to achieve a high degree of identification with the company.
