Research buildings 231 - 233 Roche

Penzberg, Germany

1999 - 2001

Roche Diagnostics GmbH, Penzberg/D

General planning, architecture

In Penzberg, a research center for pharmaceutics and diagnostics was built at the southern end of the Roche factory premises.

The two new diagnostics and pharmaceutics buildings are appropriately arranged just next to the adjoining research section. Their parallel configuration underscores the strict character of the orthogonal site grid.

The new building for the pharmaceutical research employees comprises laboratories and offices for synthesis, analysis and pharmacology including the animal laboratory, plus management. The new building for the diagnostics research employees comprises laboratories and offices for the Laboratory Systems and the Molecular Systems, plus management and information technology.

The building complex consists of two equal structures each measuring 73.42 meters length by 27.22 meters width, connected at a distance of 21.98 meters in the north of the base section by the conference building.

The clear differentiation of the volumes of the two buildings into a base section and a projecting structure derives from the spatial requirements. The finely proportioned glass facade of the laboratory floors emphasizes the lightness and elegance of the structures.

In the center between the research buildings is the conference center, the heart of the general amenities for users and visitors. From the north, you pass through the main entrance to the light-flooded lobby, which directs your eye through the inner court area to the landscape. This area provides clear and transparent access to the research buildings, the conference rooms and the auditorium.

The entrance hall has been designed so that people will easily find their way about, and its offers room for a wide variety of contacts. The 120-person auditorium one level farther down is separated in a flexible and transparent way from the lobby and therefore provides a reference to the outside. The adjoining terrace in the inner court allows the useful area of the lobby to be extended at the same building level whenever the need arises.

Connecting bridges arranged at the same level on building floors 300 and 400 to the neighboring pharmaceutics building and on building floor 300 to the neighboring diagnostics building promote interactions within the research units.

From west to east, underneath the connecting bridges, you directly reach the vertical access cores of the research building through side corridors. Supply and disposal services are effected from the south side of the building.
