Tafers HospitalTafers, Switzerland 1998 - 2000Spital des Sensebezirks General planning, architecture, realization |
The expansion is the first stage in the total renewal of the hospital. It comprises new patients’ rooms on three floors. The number of beds can be flexibly varied between 85 and 96 to suit specific needs. The ground floor of the new building houses the examination and treatment infrastructure. It includes the emergency station, the x-ray department, a day clinic with five beds and three operating theaters with the associated ancillary rooms plus a waking-up room for five patients. In accordance with the hospital’s performance specifications, the treatment floor is provided with state-of-the-art yet reasonable and justifiable medical engineering equipment taking into account today’s health cost situation. The basement accommodates the building systems, the laundry, a personnel locker room, the bed center, the pharmacy and storage areas and archives.
The architecture of the new building makes a straightforward, modern appearance based on present-day design elements. The building is clearly identifiable as a separate, new structure within a relatively heterogeneous environment made up of different building styles. As a result, it deliberately ignores what already existed. Another design requirement for the hospital was that it should radiate hygiene, cleanliness, competence and reliability.
